Ronaldos' Report

First of all, my sincerest apologies for not having reported on the last 2 meetings ? this was due to personal reasons.

The working on last Monday was a Third degree working and our young and highly motivated Brother German from Mexico was raised. Our WM WBro Dietmar chaired the meeting and was supported by VWBro Glyn presenting the Exhortation, WBro Andrew presenting the Charge, Bro Jîrg-Thomas explaining The Traditional History, WBro Cedric informing on the Additional Signs as well as our WBro Peter J on the 3rd Degree Working Tools. Very well done!!! This opinion was shared by 22 Brethren. During this evening, our Lodge have also voted and welcomed two new non-resident members, namely WBro Siegfried V (England) and WBro Igor C (Italy).

At this point of the report, allow me a short feedback on the last two meetings:

3 October 2011 ? A demonstration of the 3rd Degree Ritual was carried out. During the Meeting, two Brethren were made Honorary Member, namely WBro Jon C and WBro Jim B (both from England). Further, our WM could also welcome three new members, namely Bro Keith E (England), Bro Stephen N and Bro Gabriele P (Italy).

7th November 2011 ? Our Bro. David K was raised to the 3rd Degree. The ceremony was lead by our WM WBro Dietmar and supported by WBro Andy G presenting the Exhortation and the Charge to the candidate in a reverential manner and with feeling which was felt throughout the whole temple. Bro Jîrg-Thomas presented the Traditional History word perfectly and with panache and fervour. WBro Cedric presented the Additional Signs with his usual feeling and commitment. WBro Peter J presented the 3rd Degree Working Tools in his usual word perfect manner.

A real highlight of the December evening was a Festive Board which was attended by 19 Brethren including two visitors. Our volunteering cook, Brother Cedric has prepared a special and delicious Christmas dinner consisting of steamed salmon with Sauce Hollandaise, potatoes and red cabbage. The meal was crowned by a well tasting Italian Tiramisu. Although the evening has finished rather late, my impression was that all have enjoyed the entire evening.

The year 2011 will be finalized by a Christmas afternoon at the Paul-Moor-Schule in Mînchengladbach on 17th December where many members of our Lodge and their families and friends are expected. The year 2012 will start with a meeting in the DÅsseldorf Brewery "Zum Uerige" on 27th January 2012.

Wishing you and your families all a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year 2012, I remain,

Fraternally yours, Ronaldo

Ronaldos' Monthly Report

It was Dietmar, the WM's of 2011-12 first regular meeting and to summarize the working: it couldn't be better. Our young Mexican Brother German was passed to the 2nd degree and the WM did an excellent job in the East. He was supported by VWBro Glyn administering The South East Corner Charge, by Bro David K presenting The Working Tools and by Bro Jörg-Thomas presenting The Second Degree Tracing Board. Well done!!! The evening was well attended to, namely by 18 members and by 5 visitors. The Festive Board, again donated by WBro Andy, was a great success although some Brethren may have considered that the word 'Chili' of the dish 'Chili con carne' was taken too seriously. It was really very hot! Let's look forward to our next Regular Meeting on 3 October (Day of the German Unity).

Presentation of a Cheque for local Charity

Glyn Edmonds was delighted to be able to present a Cheque to a Wuppertal Charity called "KINDERTAL" on 29th June 2011. Kindertal supports the over 20 000 poorer Children living in Wuppertal. Glyn took part in three charity concerts along with Primrose Hill, Daisy Bates and Jan Röttger & Friends and went to Radio Wuppertal, who along with the Caritas, Diakonie and the Stadtsparkass Wuppertal are "KINDERTAL," to present the Cheque to the Radio presenter Christiane Rüffer.

Lodge Niederrhein Installation 4 June, 2011

Brethren, once again it has been a wonderful weekend.  I would like to congratulate the Installing Master, David J for the manner in which he carried out his duties, as Installing Master, and his speech at the festive board, the new Master, Dietmar for the sincerity in which he has carried out his initial duties as Master and the wonderful, sincere, amusing and emotional way he gave his response to my toast at the festive Board. Jim Lutton again confirmed his Secretarial skills so efficiently that people sometimes do not really appreciate the hard work that is required to ensure that the Summons etc are with us on time and accurate. He showed his tact inside the Lodge and we should all be grateful that we have such an efficient Secretary. Well done, Jim.
Ronaldo proved again his immense industry and his hotel co-ordination was supreme.
His speech, at the festive board , was really good and he was right to remind us that visitors become less each year. As Ronaldo said, they have a habit of becoming Joining members!
Glyn Edmonds, as DC was outstanding yet again. His rendition of the Masters song is superb and brings every Master close to tears- this year was no exception. And then Dietmar had to respond. It was pure magic from both of them.

There were, I believe, about 65 brethren at the Meeting and 48 sat down for the festive board.
16 residents, 20 non residents, and about 29 visitors were present. Not bad really considering it was a holiday weekend in Germany where travelling would be difficult and many visitors had family duties at such a time. Lots of greetings and numerous apologies have been received by Jim.

We were honored by the presence of the Assistant Grand Master, RW Bro John H supported by Officers of our Grand Lodge and we were graced by a plethora of Grand Lodge Officers and Provincial Grand Lodge Officers from England led by the Assistant Provincial Grand Master for West Lancashire. W. Bro Jon Clipsham.
.
It was pleasing that 20 non residents were able to attend. There were all 10 including my great friend of many years Derek from the Doncaster area, 4 from Manchester including Bro “Dad”, 3 from Sussex, Arthur, the biker the loyal Celestino from Italy –oh and yours truly from beautiful Stratford upon Avon.

The Installation itself had many highlights. The Installing Team supporting David J and led by Glyn were very good- Peter J as IPM and Chaplain proved yet again his sheer loyalty to the Lodge. He is a great asset to us. Cedric, Ronaldo, Trevor Edmonds, (who also gave a fine address to the Wardens) and Conway (nice Tylers Toast) carried out their duties very well.
The Working Tools were presented with typical Lodge Niederrhein panache. An EA, a FC, A MM and a PM.
Well done Eddie, Thibault, David K and Germán you were brilliant.
.
It was a wonderful meeting followed by an excellent festive board, with substantial money being raised for the WM Charity by way of the raffle. The AGM expressed his appreciation for the week-end and thanked Niederrhein for its strength, support and loyalty to the United Grand Lodges of Germany and the Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany.
The response to the Visitors Toast was given by Worshipful Brother Andrew T from Doncaster. It was very adept and amusing, well received by the brethren, and he gave the WM, a carved out of coal beautiful Mallard model steam engine symbolizing Doncaster heritage in coal and manufacturing locomotives. It all demonstrates the great fraternity between our lodge in Düsseldorf and the Doncaster Lodges.

The second response was in French given Worshipful Brother Joseph G and translated into English by Thibault. It was delightful.

In a third response Derek in his usual generous manner presented some beautiful whisky glasses depicting Lodge Niederrhein to the WM, DC ,Secretary and Hotel Coordinator for their help to the Doncaster party of 13 ( 10 members and 3 visitors)

To me, however, the most wonderful aspect of the Installation was the fact that Dietmar had taken his rightful place as Master of our Lodge. Brethren when one realises that it is only a year ago since he had his operation against a life threatening illness Dietmar being in the Chair says it all.
In his response to my toast he thanked me for being English language teacher his friend, his Proposer into Freemasonry, being at his wedding (as he was mine), being his business partner, And now he is my Worshipful Master. Bravo.
He told us that when he found out he was ill , he also found out who his true friends were and he made special reference to the brethren of Lodge Niederrhein

I have been the honour of giving the Address to the Master by Lodge Niederrhein on no less than 12 Installations but with no disrespect to other masters this year for me it had to be special. It was.
The day finished with about 30 of us including some wives making our annual visit to the Brauerei Uel

And so Brethren if I have forgotten to mention anything or not mentioned you, I apologise.

WM, IPM, DC, Secretary, Hotel Coordinator, Brethren all, I thank you.

Kind regards, S&F, David

Short report on the Installation Meeting on Saturday, 4th June 2011

Nothing can be added to the wonderful report of RWBro David St. We have to congratulate him for his outstanding way of delivering a comprehensive report. On David’s idea to visit after the meeting, a pub in the Altstadt of Düsseldorf has already become a tradition – the Brauerei Zur Uel in the famous Ratinger Straße was again visited – not only by the English Brethren and his wonderful ladies or daughters – but also by the new Installed WM, the SW and several other “local” Brethren.

Although I might repeat it: it was a wonderful day for all of us and it was Brotherhood at its best.

S & F, Ronaldo

Ronaldos' Report on our Regular Meeting (Past Master Night) on 2 May 2011

What a wonderful and harmonious Meeting on the evening of 2nd May. It was our Past Masters Night and we worked in the 1st degree which means that we “initiated” our Master Elect, Bro Dietmar. The PMs were WBro Martin, WBro Ronaldo, WBro Andrew, WBro Conway, WBro Jim, WBro Ralph and WBro Cedric. VWBro Glyn presented the Working Tools as perfect as always and WBro Andy gave an impressive presentation of the Charge after Initiation. New was the fact that this Initiation ritual was accompanied by explanatory text comments compiled by
VWBro Rev N Barker-Cryer M.A. PGChap. After the Past Masters returned to their chairs, a new non-resident member was voted in and WBro Arthur will be welcomed as new member on the forth-coming Installation Meeting.

The meeting was extremely well attended but we were all surprised that 24 (!) Brethren stayed for the Festive Board – a new record. Amongst them were several visitors, namely 3 from Star of Saxony, 1 from Madison Lodge N°87, AF&AM, in the State of Connecticut, USA,
and 1 from Ver Sacrum, Cologne.

Although the Chili con carne with rice (prepared by WBro Andy and WBro Conway) was quite hot, I believe that the good food and especially the wonderful harmony will attract many Brethren and visitors to come again.

The International Lodge, by David Stevens:

When one examines the Brethren details even further one can state that there are Brethren who originally come from 18 different countries and now live in 12 different countries. They were initiated into Freemasonry in 11 different countries from 6 different Constitutions. Our ages are from 30 to over 80.

There are 21 of us who have been Past Masters of Lodge Niederrhein and 25 who have been Masters of other Lodges including 3 who were Initiates of Niederrhein. And I am so delighted that Brother Dietmar who I proposed into the Lodge, as an Initiate, is now your Master Elect. Brethren you have done well.

Ronaldo's News Letter

The last newsletter was dated back in February when we initiated our Brother Alexander. Meanwhile, two Regular Meetings in March and April have taken place and both meetings were well attended (despite the March Meeting occuring in middle of the Rheinland Carnival).

On 7 March, another new Brother Germán from Mexico could be initiated. The work was carried out in a perfect manner, clearly demonstrating that each previous Lodge of Instruction is a great advantage for everyone. The participants are practicing the Ritual and the others learn all about it. Thanks to a real good preceptor.
Brother Germán - welcome to our real international Lodge Niederrhein and to the mysterious and wonderful world of Freemasonry. The evening was concluded by a Festive Board with a Goulash soup and several snacks.

On 18 March, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day (or Night) in a pub in the Altstadt of Düsseldorf. Thanks to the efforts of our Junior Warden, Bro Jörg-Thomas, we enjoyed a wonderful evening with Glyn's Band "
Primrose Hill", with excellent food (for example Fish & Chips) and with good beer (for example draft Guinness). The event was well attended and thanks to the efforts of our Charity Steward WBro Andrew, we raised a significant amount for the WM Charity.

The month of April did not start with a Regular Meeting but with our traditional Ladies Night (
please see David's separate report with some photos) on 2 April. Well attended (unfortunately without VWBro Glyn and Heike) in a well-known surrounding, namely in a small hotel close to Brüggen (which is not far away from the Dutch border).

Only two days later, on 4 April we passed our Brother David K. in a ceremony in which a perfect and emotional ritual was offered to our members and to several guests. We also admitted Kevin O. as a joining member. Kevin, who was origionally initiated in Canada moved to Germany and found us through this Web Page. The evening was highlighted by a Festive Board which was attended by 20 Brethren (it's long time that we have had so many participants). The highlight was a superb meal (Chilli con carne with rice) which was prepared by two Brethren and Maîtres de cuisine, namely by WBro Andrew and WBro Conway.

It has to be mentioned that the harmony of our Lodge is outstanding. Very personally, I feel very honored being a Freemason and member of Lodge Niederrhein!

Lodge Niederrhein Ladies Night

The Ladies Night was a great success with a total of 28 guests.  The harmony and atmosphere throughout the evening was outstanding!!
The weather was very good, so we held our reception outside the restaurant before going in to sit down for our meal.  The service and food was excellent and we collected in the region of €400 for charity.
I have attached a few photos from the evening, (Click Here to go to them)

Visit to Sardinia February 2011 to meet up with Celestino.and Cedric.

Well we are back from a marvellous week where we so majestically looked after by dear Celestino.
When we arrived at Cagliari airport, there to meet us was Cedric. Ingrid said where is Celestino and Cedric joked he had been sent to collect us.
We were a little worried as dear Cedric is not known for his navigational skills. Of course outside was our wonderful friend and brother Celestino who proved yet again to be the most remarkable host and of such a generous nature.

Brethren the Island is spectacular, the food is fantastic and I must have put on 4 kilos. We were there partly for a holiday (Ingrid in particular) and partly for the raising of Brother Gabriele Pedretti who as you know has visited us in Düsseldorf. So we left Ingrid in the lovely company of three beautiful ladies- Paula the wife of Gabriele, Cristina and Gabriella and set off to Lodge Heredom. Here we were treated with honour- the second visit for Cedric who visited as you may re-call with Ronaldo to Heredom when Celestino was in the Chair. It was pleasing to give Greetings from Lodge Niederrhein- all three of us.

And what a professional meeting. They carry out the Emulation Ritual just like us and so it was easy to follow. Gabriele proved to be an excellent candidate and was raised to the Sublime degree of a Master Mason in an impeccable manner.
At the festive board, our other good friend Maurizio translated for Cedric and as I was sitting next to an Englishman, Martin, who is a member of Heredom I to was covered. My Italian is not that good but I gather that my lovely wife with her language skills had no problems with her group who mainly spoke no English.
Brethren you might remember Maurizio. He was the brother who was taken seriously ill in Wuppertal when Wolfram was our Lodge Almoner. Wolfram looked after Maurizio with great dignity and fraternal friendship and visited him on a very regular basis in hospital. Maurizio grew up in Glasgow and we have shared many a Billy Connelly joke. He has asked especially to be remembered to Wolfram and has tremendous affection for him and our lodge.
Talking about friendship and affection that is what was so clear about the brethren, their partners and indeed everyone on the Island.

It is pure joy to witness. At the Festive Board we were presented with a beautiful book of the evening’s Ritual. We will treasure this lovely gesture.

On the Saturday, we had a further treat as all of us i.e. including Ingrid were invited to a Demolay meeting for young men age 12 to 20. Here again Celestino is the driving force and we all enjoyed the day. It is hoped that in years to come some of these young people will consider the possibility of becoming freemasons.

On the Sunday we all went to the lovely home of Gabriele and Paula to enjoy the sheer genius of the cooking by Gabriele. Oh delight. Dietmar will be jealous as he and I have enjoyed his cooking before.

The photographs attached show:

Thank you Celestino.

Our first Regular Meeting in 2011 was well attended by almost all
officers and by 5 visitors (1 Brother from our Sister Lodge Star of
Saxony No 853, 1 Brother from Beaver Lodge No 885 and 3 Brethren from
Lodge Matteo Alberti No 1020 in Bergisch Gladbach). They must have known
that we were initiating our new Brother Alexander. All involved Brethren
and the new Brother enjoyed an excellent Masonic working.
It was also good to see our Italian Brother who tries to come as often
as possible to our Meetings - from Cagliari in Sardinia. Welcome back is
our Golfing Brother, Andy who was responsible for a good selection of music!
The Festive Board - organized by the new sub-committee "Food & Beverage"
- was also very well attended and no soup and various appetizers were
left. The sub-committee might consider to order a bit more - next time!
To conclude this report: Freemasonry is wonderful and the harmony in
Lodge Niederrhein is as it should be.

Annual January informal gathering

A Report from Ronaldo
The Annual Informal Get-Together under the patronage of "Professor
Papenheim zu Niederrhein" on 21 January 2011 in the Brauerei Schumacher
in the centre of Düsseldorf was the third one of its kind and may become
a fixed social activitiy at the beginning of every year for Freemasons
and for friends of Lodge Niederrhein. The attendance was this time very
good as 8 members attended plus 2 ladies and 2 future masons. The beer
(Altbier) is brewed by this brewery itself and does taste very special.
The offer of food and quality was very satisfying.
To draw a conclusion: Lodge Niederrhein at its best and the harmony was
unbeatable.

Here are a few photos to look at. There was a Carol Service and Nativity
Play- directed by Greg Doran- which was for RSC Staff last Friday.
As Shakespeare's Church is 800 years old this year and the new transformed
RSC Theatre had just re-opened there was a Candlelight procession from the
church to the theatre. We were invited to take part by handing out the
candles etc and you will see from the photos our preparation.
As you know there is Masonic connection with the theatre as the original
1876 theatre was opened by the GM and the foundation stone for the 1932
theatre was laid in 1929 using the silver trowel held by Swan of Avon Lodge
No 2133 by the PGM.

We were positioned at the lamp-post which had been donated by the City of
Bonn which was apt as Ruben is a student at Bonn University and Ingrid was
born near Bonn if on the Rhine!

Meeting on 4th October

on Monday we initiated a new Mason. And I think, he will be an asset for Lodge Niederrhein. But let’s begin with the opening of the Lodge.

After his Installation in June, it was WBro David J. first time to rule the Lodge and he did an excellent job. WBro David J. had a supportive team to realize an enjoyable evening.

Our new member, Bro David K. – fortunately a new David as we are running short on Davids – was quite nervous but he passed his initiation with bravo. Our WM WBro David J. has initiated Bro David K. with the support of WBro Andy G. who took the position of JD, of Bro Thibault who did also an excellent job and of WBro Glyn (Sec of the evening) who showed his real class. My impression was that our initiate has enjoyed nearly every moment of the evening as much as every one of us has done.

Thanks to an experienced DofC realized by WBro Conway, to WBro Ralf as Tyler and WBro Cedric as IG, the evening was a success. It was again a pleasure to see Bro Dietmar and WBro Celestino amongst us. We could welcome two Brethren from Star of Saxony.

A Festive Board took place in the well-known Chinese Restaurant “Great Wall” down the street which was well attended. Due to the unavailability of a local caterer, this was just a pragmatic solution. Let’s hope that we find a more suitable one for the forth-coming Meetings.

I look forward to seeing many of you on Monday, 1st November!!!

Sincerely & fraternally,
Ronaldo, IPM on that evening

Ladies Night April 24th, 2010 Lodge Niederrhein

This year our master and Junior Warden chose the delightful environment of the Land hotel Borner Mühle at Brüggen.
What a splendid choice- the watermill the nature and the exquisite cuisine made the evening a night to remember.
We were a rather small group for a Ladies night with only 10 Brethren, 10 ladies and 3 guests present. The three guests were Brothers Georg-Plutachos from Greece and Brother Armin H from Bochum and Klaus the Principal of the Paul Moor School. Jörg-Thomas had planned to come but after a very exhausting day with other Masonic duty he had to submit his apologies but he kindly paid for his meal with having the pleasure of eating it!

Several familiar faces were missing as unfortunately because of both health and family engagements they were unable to attend. Martin mentioned in his speech both Dietmar and Cedric and all our thoughts and prayers are directed at these two stalwarts of the Lodge who normally attend social events. Out thoughts too are with their families at this most difficult time for them.

We managed to raise a good amount for the Paul Moor School and on behalf of Ronaldo I thank all who attended for their generosity. Apart from the raffle, David J kindly donated his first CD plus a free bagpipe lesson and Andy splendidly offered a free Gliding lesson. With these I was able to “squeeze” out of everyone by three “Dutch Auctions.( the eventual winners being Milica G, Sue J and Martin

We all look forward to hearing Sue J play the bagpipes and we must all go to Elmpt to see their Deputy Chief Flying instructor (Andy) show our Master, Martin, how to fly!

May I take this opportunity to thank David and Heike for organising an absolutely superb evening?

St Patrick’s Night celebration March 12th, 2010

Last night we celebrated a wonderful evening of fun, music, food and helping our charity, The Paul Moor School: The venue was at O’Reilly’ Irish Pub in the heart of Düsseldorf Altstadt.
The evening was brilliantly organised by our Junior Warden David J. A wonderful venue with a private room for us, fantastic food- Irish stew and fish and chips, outstanding live music, bingo and a Dutch auction. Oh of course there was also the Guinness.
Glyn and his band played some great Irish music which we all at various stages joined in the chorus. Many of us have been witness to the first class playing of the bagpipes by David before. I have to say from my point of view, the playing with such passion by this former World Champion Piper was a joy and we should feel privileged to have been there to hear it.
Congratulations to all the musicians. A congratulation to the bar staff and cooks. Congratulations to Ralf B on celebrating his 54th birthday and Samuel M who celebrated his third birthday .He was not present but Celestino was there.
13 resident members and 1 non resident member (yes Celestino was there and brought 4 guests from Sardinia)) attended along with their wives and many guests including three potential future members. I am not sure of the numbers but think there were about 50 people.
The bingo was interesting! A rather lack-lustre performance by the writer or so Cedric kept reminding me has led me to believe that it is not my calling! However I redeemed myself somewhat by ensuring that we raised EUR 170 at the Dutch auction for a CD produced by Glyn and his band. I think that about EUR 300 was raised during the evening.
So brethren let us congratulate David J, Glyn and Jim for organising the bingo.

Kind regards, Slanje

David

David was away in Venice at New Year, As you can see it was rather wet!

P1010179P1010183small

Here is an excerpt from a Letter covering his visit:

Igor heard about our trip and invited us to spend the Saturday evening with him and his delightful family- as he said the less pretty part of Venice but the drier side! Brethren the hospitality of Igor and the fact that we had only met briefly- if indeed we did hit it off- is confirmation of the magic of Freemasonry. Both Harvey and Josh are not members of our wonderful fraternity- perhaps we have a couple of future candidates. I kept the fact that Igor was a Musician a secret from them until we arrived at his house. As you can imagine, Josh, who has just graduated was rather pleased to meet Igor. As the young man has just completed a new composure which is being played at the Edinburgh Arts Festival in August, Igor has requested a copy. So music and Freemasonry, Venice, wine and food were major topics of our conversation throughout the evening.

Ladies Night 2009
A brief report from Bro. Dietmar (Junior Warden)
For generations our Brethren, their Good Ladies and guests were invited in hotels to celebrate the social culmination of any Masonic Year: The Ladies Gala Night. Obviously the time for a change had come. Our good experience with a Spanish Dinner in the Restaurant Pozo Quirino in Neuss led our WM Ronaldo to the idea  the beautiful cellar vaults of this restaurant could also frame the Ladies Night in April 2009.
Although the event had to be dated at the beginning of the Easter school holidays 37 persons followed the call and we all had a good time in fantastic atmosphere. The cuisine served the most typical Spanish food products and excellent wines accompanied our meal.
Against this background it is no surprise that also our raffle and the auction achieved an unusual great success. Our Charity Steward David, who spurred on the draw and the auction in his well-known professionalism ("Will anyone offer more?), had two peculiarities at his disposal: A bottle of finest Scottish whiskey, donated by WBro. Peter (our WM of the previous year) and a hand-painted plate with the seal of our Lodge, which he donated for the auction himself. A really considerable amount was raised for our WM´s charity.
Thus it became long after midnight before the gala broke up and the satisfied guests found their way home.
WM Ronaldo, congratulations again for your Ladies Night!
